Workshop: 2018 NC Residential Energy Code Training

When adopted the 2012 NC Residential Energy Code had a goal of improving the energy efficiency of residential structures by approximately 15%. It was a big improvement and a big hurdle for the residential construction industry in NC. Here we are in 2018 having just adopted the 2018/2019 NC Residential Energy Code.

This workshop will provide an in-depth look at how well residential contractors did complying with the 2012 NC Residential Energy Code with a focus on the key areas of compliance moving forward into the next code cycle. Likewise, this workshop will highlight one major change made to the NC Residential Energy Code in 2018/2019 which is the addition of the Energy Rating Index (ERI) as a new compliance option. The workshop will also include an energy code visual library to share up-to-date new photos from job sites across the state of compliant and non-compliant practices and share with the learner specific changes between the 2012 NC Residential Energy Code and the 2018/2019 NC Residential Energy Code.

Learning Objectives: 

1. Continued understanding of the scope and purpose of the residential energy code.
2. Share areas of non-compliance or improvement with participants. 
3. Review the importance and reason for select energy code requirements and their contribution to the larger energy picture in NC.
4. Better understand insulation installation and air sealing methods and requirements as outlined in the code.
5. Review the lighting requirements for residential construction. 
6. Learn the duct sealing requirements, different options for compliance in regards to the tightness of the duct system and the impact duct tightness plays in home performance and comfort. 
7. Introduce participants to Section 406 of the 2018/2019 NC Residential Energy Code. A new and innovative compliance option.
8. Prepare the participant to understand and use the Energy Rating Index as outlined in the Section 406 of the 2018/2019 NC Residential Energy Code.
